Why District Heating?

Sweden is a cold country, and we need a reliable source of heat that’s both safe and environmentally friendly. District heating is a flexible alternative that can utilise many different kinds of fuel and so make the most of energy that would’ve been lost otherwise. Choosing district heating is the same as choosing a simple, safe, convenience source of heating that more or less runs itself. And choosing district heating means leaving yourself plenty of time to do other things while at the same time doing your bit for the environment

A smart system

Utilising biofuels from the district and other local resources, district heating makes the most of energy that would otherwise have been lost, such as waste heat from industry, waste from forest felling and other waste. Four-fifths of the heat used in Swedish district heating networks is based on energy that would have been useless otherwise.

Efficient district heating plants mean fewer emissions of environmentally hazardous substances to air than boilers on individual properties, thereby reducing environmental impact and noticeably improving air quality in Swedish towns.

Steady growth

District heating is currently responsible for around half of all heating of homes and other premises in Sweden. It’s available in 270 of Sweden’s 290 municipalities, supplying around 50 TWh each year. Compare this with the 65 TWh which all hydroelectricity produces in the course of a normal year.
